I have posted before about this subject and would like to thank those who were wonderful about helping me. I really thought I had figured out things but now my dad has thrown a big 'ol wrench into my path! UHG! Let me back up for a minute and give a little info about me and my family before I ask for help.....
My name is Jenn. My dad is Doug Hill. His mom/my grandmother is Mrytle May Hale-Hill. Her parents were Thomas Hale (son of Ben B Hale and Mary L Carpenter) and Josephine M Emery-Hale. From my understanding Tom Hale worked at St Francis possibly as a delivery person or as a farmer. Josephine's parents were Josephine L and James H Emery. James was the son of Henry R H Emery and Susan Brown. Josephine L is the one I have been having trouble with.
So, my question is this....can anyone help me figure out WHO Josephine L was??? What was her maiden name??? Who were her parents??? Was she in fact really Native American???
I did some searching on my own through Ancestry.com and found a Josephine Berdoux that matched the age/date/place where my g-g-grandmother would have been and a couple of "her" future brothers in law lived in the same household as hired laborers. I was sure this was the right Josephine. My grandmother had told me the last name of (sounds like) DuFill. That didn't match so I just figured my grandmother is getting older and may not remember correctly.
Now, my dad was telling me on the phone the other night that he has a picture along with a name....Josephine LaDeaux. All the Josephine LaDeaux's that I have looked up do not match as far as dates. But then, I typed LaDeaux into RootsWeb.com and found something very interesting. That is what brought me here to ask for help. They had a John LaDeaux married to an Amelia Douville (sounds a bit like DuFill, eh?) and the son I saw was born in the neighborhood of the Josephine I am looking for (she was born in 1871). Could they be her parents? Oh, and I forgot to mention, John and Amelia were listed as living on the Rosebud Reservation at the time. I am hopeful but don't want to get my hopes up.
If anyone has any advice or information to help me figure this out I would really appreciate it and would be grateful. Thank you.
Jenn

jenn: One thing i know for certain and others will back me up on this: the siouxs did not tell time as we whities do.So you have to allow a leeway of, I would say + or minus 2-5 years, for a given age. It frustrates me when people just hand me names without dates and ask me to find them.
I have a Josephine, who was born in 1864. BonHomme, South Dakota. and a Mrs. Josephine Emery born 1863 Sussex, Saginaw, Michigan. both married to James Henry emery on the same date, Jul 2, 1889. The person who submitted the information to the LDS Archives is : Marjorie Leah Smith 1428 - 440 Simcoe Street Victoria, british columbia VSV 1L3 Why don't you write to her and see what she can provide in the way of information on the 2 Josephines? I can see why you are confused about her. Is there an obituary for your Grandfather that you can refere to?
James henry Emery was born 9Dec. 1859, Sussex, Saginaw, Michigan He died 8 Sep. 1935 at Burke,St. Joseph, South Dakota. also go back to the rootsweb web site and find the name of the submitter of the tree you got your information from and wreite to them and ask for information. I don't put much stock in thae book the Saga of sully flats, as a genealogical reference source.

Josephine was a Lakota from the Sicangu band, enrolled at Rosebud. I have a birth date of September 1870, but that could be off a couple of years. I have her middle initial as "L", it wasn't uncommon for a married woman to use the first letter of her maiden name as a middle initial. She died 27 June 1945 in Todd County, South Dakota. I was also wondering about the names. You said it is probably LaDeaux, but you found a census record that says Berdoux. Those names sound very similar, I wonder if it is being read wrong because of bad handwriting, or maybe the enumerator heard it as Berdoux. Josephine was married to James Henry Emery, born 9 December 1859 in Saginaw, Michigan, and died 8 September 1935 in South Dakota. I still haven't updated my family tree since my computer crashed, but the old information I have is that they had about 12 children.

Hermin1,
I figured that the dates might be off a little but the Josephine I am looking for would have been born about 1871 and the only Josephine LaDeaux I could find was born about 1906...that is a little too off to think it was her. But maybe it is the one you found listed as born around 1864...that would make more sense. And my g-g-grandfather was James H Emery so that must be her. James was born in Saginaw, MI if I remember correctly.
My question now is who were Josephine's parents???
Thanks for helping me again.

Jimmy,
Those are their children. Thank you for adding the spouses...I didn't have all that before. My dad is coming to visit in July and said he is bringing the picture of Josephine L when she was eight years old...I can't wait!!! Now, how do I look for Josephine's parents??? I found something that shows a John LaDeaux married to an Amelia Douville and they were on the Rosebud Reservation. How do I find out who their children are/were??? Thanks!!

Jimmy I agree with you in re. to the bordeaux search, and the middle name being themaiden name or Indian name. jenn: Josephine Emery Hale sure was a beautiful woman by the picture. Ladeaux(or ledeaux) is French. I amthinking that Josephine might have beena half blood,1/2 French and 1/2 lakota I would not get my hopes up of finding Josephine L.'s parents, unless you can contact one of the Emery ancestors, other than your grandmother. Youmight also try th rosebud Indian Reservation and see what they may have My reasoning is that you ae talking a long way back, before the Rosebud Reservtion was establishedI still think you should contact the the two persons mentoned above, and see what they have to offer for information. .

[/img][ftp][/ftp]ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/mn/native/land/wereser9.txt While I was going through this list I remember your post about Ledeaux. This page is from MN rootsweb White Earth Reservation and it lists the people who died before 1910. There are a few La Doux and a Josephine Le Doux and a couple other named with their date of death. It most likely isn't the family you are looking for but always a good idea to rule them out later. Sorry I don't think my link works. Maybe do the search at rootsweb US Genweb for Minnesota White Earth Reservation

More on your Josephine- notice that in 1929 she is married- 1930 she is widowed. 1937 is the last I found her on the censuses. I have her on 37 censuses. I will find Steve's number for you. Ray

Hey, I think I found something!!!! I don't know though...I hate to get my hopes up but here goes.... My dad said he has a picture of Josephine when she was 8 years old at the Turtle Mountain Reservation holding a coyote pup. I just found a family on the Indian Schedules from the Turtle Mountain Reservation with the last name Laverdure. Could it sound similar to LaDeaux? And it has her birth year as 1874 and that is only three years off of what I had (1871). I don't know...I still feel that the Josephine Berdoux who lived in the same household in 1881 with the brothers of her future husband is the right one but this new information has to make me stop to think. Any thoughts on all this would be appreciated. Thanks! jenn

UHG! I just looked further into it and found the Josephine Laverdure in a 1932 census married with children and still in North Dakota. Okay, well then for now I am going to still believe that maybe it is the Josephine Berdoux....but the curious thing is my dad saying he has a picture of her at Turtle Mountain. Hmmm, maybe he is mixed up??? He is visiting at the end of July and hopefully he will not forget to bring the picture for me! Thanks again for your time! =)

Hey, do you use ancestry.com? I use it different than most. On the Indian censuses, type in the first name- Josephine. Tribe- Sioux. year of birth plus one. That is all. It gives you 355 hits. Since many are listed on every censuses, it cuts down on a lot of looking. Also something that worried me until it was explained is the fact that so many wifes were listed as head of household, no husband and kept haveing kids. Than I was told that if the husband was not enrolled, he would not be listed. Dumb Cajun, me. Since I am now thought with the Yellow Cloud research, except for Dorothy Arconge Schmidt, I will have time to help more people. I will see what i can find for you. Ray

Thanks, Ray. I have been using ancesrty.com and like you I have been typing in the first name and year of birth. That is how I found Josephine Berdoux in the 1881 census living with William Miller and his wife Josephine Miller, their son-an infant, and Sophia Berdoux (sister of either William or Josephine Miller and mom of Josephine and James Berdoux). There were two Emery's in the household as laborers. Josephine's husband was James H Emery and the tow living with there were his brothers. And like it was said before by someone here, Berdoux is very similar to LaDeaux. Thank you for all of your time and all of your help. Let me know what you are able to find. =)

Okay, I think I may be on to something...but I am hoping someone here can either discredit this or confirm this. My dad says that "LaDeaux" was the last name but I found "Berdoux" in the same household as her future brothers in law in 1880.
So, I have been putting together things that my grandmother told me...that her grandfather (not sure how many 'greats' back) was a french fur trader. Well, I found a James Bordeaux who was infact a french fur trader who married Huntkalutawin (Cheif Swift Bear's sister, daughter of Lone Dog and Gray Buffalo Woman).
Okay, the other name that my grandmother kept mentioning was "DuFill". Interestingly enough there was a son of James and Marie (aka Huntkalutawin) Bordeaux who was named Louis who married a Julia DuBray.
Back to that 1880 census, Josephine's mother was listed as a Sophia Berdoux...could Sophia been mistaken for Julia??? I know that is a stretch but what do you think??? I just can't seem to find anything else that would fit the information my family gave me.
Another thing that is nagging at the back of my mind is this...I remembered being little hearing about a Native American relative who I remembered as Sitting Bull...now was it really Sitting Bull or was I just a kid wanting it to be someone I learned about at school??? Maybe but chew on this for food for thought....Huntkalutwin's brother was Sitting Bear....could I have heard that and thought it was Sitting Bull??? Or am I just all wrong and have the wrong family but want to make it fit to save my sanity?!!!
I appreciate any help anyone can offer with this.
